Palmer was the first thermometer manufacturer in the US, founded by James Foster in Cincinnati, Ohio in 1836.  They advertised their "red reading mercury" thermometers in which the silvery mercury reflected a red line so as to appear red for easier reading.  In 1997 they acquired Wahl Corporation and are now called Palmer Wahl, located in Asheville, North Carolina since 1987. ​
