The Gidrometpribor Scientific Production Association was founded in 1942 in the USSR as a state-owned entity for the production of hydrological and meteorological instruments.  It had production facilities in several locations, including Moscow, Leningrad, Safonovsky, and Riga.  Their instruments have the logo 'GMP' in the Russian alphabet.  

​With the changes in the USSR/Russia in the 1980s and 1990s several of these production facilities were privatized as a  'Joint Stock Company' (abbreviated OAO in Russian) and continued to produce meteorological instruments.  This included 'JSC Plant Safonovsky Gidrometpribor' and 'Gidrometpribor OAO (Moscow)'.
