Lilley & Gillie
The firm of John Lilley & Son was founded in Londom in 1812. John Wilson Gillie went to work for the nautical instrument makers J J Wilson & Sons in Sunderland in 1880. In 1913 John Lilley & Son merged with Wilson & Gillie and used the Lilley name. In the 1930s, another merger resulted in a name change to Lilley & Reynolds Ltd. In 1943 the name was again changed to Lilley & Gillie.
In the 1970s majority ownership of Lilley & Gillie was purchased by the parent company of the Dutch nautical instrument firm Observator. The assets of the Sestrel line of instruments have since been acquired, and in 1989 the company morphed into Sestrel International.They were purchased by the Charente Group of Liverpool in 1999.
