James Joseph Hicks was born in 1837. He apprenticed to L P Casella starting in 1852. In 1861 he started his own instrument business at 8 Hatton Garden in London. He expanded to 8, 9, & 10 Hatton Garden in the 1870s, where the company remained in business until the 1930s. The company was incorporated with Stanley & Co in 1911. James died in 1916.
