Dubois et Casse Barometers

These are five aneroid barometers from the collection of Josef Lang of Germany. They were made by the firm Dubois & Casse of France in the 1860s. They were one of the firms to begin barometer production after Lucien Vidie’s patent expired in 1859. Lucien Vidie (1805-1866) had patented the aneroid barometer in 1844.

Dubois et Casse began making aneroid barometers soon after the end of Vidie patent, maybe a few years later than Naudet (PHBN) which started in 1859. In 1860 PHBN received a new patent for an ‘advanced barometer’, causing Dubois et Casse to modify their design for sale in France.

Aneroid barometers were later produced by the firm Alfred Casse, but it is not known if this was a successor to Dubois et Casse. There is an 1895 catalog from Alfred Casse on this website, and their logo is different from Dubois et Casse. Dubois et Casse ended up as part of Maxant in 1895/1896. The Maxant anchor logo is a modification of the Dubois et Casse logo.

The barometers have scales in French or Paris inches. The label Changeable (Veranderlich) is next to 28 French inches, which corresponds to 29.8 English/US inches.
